New Superintendents Institute 2020-21
New Superintendents Orientation
August 3-4, 2020 / 9 am – 1:30 pm both days
8 CTLE credits
The New Superintendents Institute consists of four sessions throughout the year specifically for first year superintendents or those superintendents new to New York State. Participants may opt to attend individual sessions or all workshops.
The first workshop, the New Superintendents Orientation, is held in early August, prior to the start of the school year, and offers an introduction to The Council, LEAF, Inc. and the New York State Education Department. The New Superintendents Institute continues with sessions in October, November, and March. The October and March workshops are planned to coincide with The Council's annual conferences to help reduce additional time out of district. The program is facilitated by Dr. Douglas Huntley and faculty include experienced superintendents and NYSCOSS staff.
Topics throughout the series include, but are not limited to:
- developing superintendent/school board relationships,
- finance and budget development,
- the superintendent's role as district advocate,
- district culture,
- and leadership responsibilities and ethics.
With the COVID-19 pandemic, we have transitioned the first session for new superintendents to a virtual format. The program will be held via Zoom and includes discussions on leadership, NYSED, reopening schools, facilities management, ethics, and fiscal leadership.
