SELF, SYSTEMS, & LEADERSHIP

SELF, SYSTEMS, & LEADERSHIP
Leadership is often measured by strategy, systems, and results. Yet beneath every initiative, every difficult conversation, and every change effort lies something more fundamental: the human experience of leading. As leaders advance in their roles, the challenges become less technical and more adaptive. The questions shift — from what to do, to how to be. How do we remain grounded when conditions are uncertain? How do we build trust when tensions are high? How do we respond rather than react when the stakes feel personal? How do we lead systems without being consumed by them? New York State’s Portrait of a Graduate names self-awareness, reflection, responsible decision-making, and well-being as essential outcomes for every student. NYSED’s Comprehensive School-Based Mental Health System Briefs reinforce a parallel message for adults: leaders play a critical role in creating the conditions for safety, belonging, trust, and growth.

Session 1  |  @ Fall Summit, Saratoga  |  The Self in the System | Sept. 27 / 1 - 2:30 p.m.

Leadership begins with understanding the impact of self. Participants will explore how their experiences, beliefs, and leadership patterns influence the systems they lead. Through reflection, discussion, and assessment, leaders will examine the relationship between personal awareness and organizational culture — beginning with how they show up.

Key Question: How does the way I show up shape the experiences of others?

Session 2  |  Virtual  |  Awareness: Seeing What Shapes Us | Oct 15th 3:30 to 5

Many leadership challenges begin long before a decision is made. This session explores self-awareness as a foundational leadership competency. Participants will examine personal triggers, assumptions, emotional patterns, and default responses — and the ways these operate beneath the surface, often without our awareness.

Key Question: What patterns am I bringing into the system without realizing it?

Session 3  |  Virtual  |  Intention: Choosing How We Lead | Nov 19th 3:30 to 5

Leadership is often defined in moments when conditions are less than ideal. This session explores the relationship between values, identity, and purpose — and the shift from automatic reaction to intentional response. Participants will examine what it means to lead from a grounded sense of who they are, not just what the situation demands.

Key Question: Who do I want to be when leadership gets difficult?

Session 4  |  Virtual  |  Relationships, Trust, and Psychological Safety | Jan 14th 3:30 to 5

Every organizational outcome travels through relationships. This session examines emotional intelligence, trust, and the conditions that allow people to contribute honestly, learn openly, and engage fully. Participants will explore the specific leadership behaviors that create — or undermine — psychological safety.

Key Question: What conditions am I creating for others through my leadership?

Session 5  |  Virtual  |  Leading Through Complexity and Change | Feb 11th 3:30 to 5

Change efforts often fail not because the strategy is wrong, but because leaders focus on systems while overlooking the human experience within them. This session explores adaptive leadership, resistance, uncertainty, and what it takes to remain present when the system feels unsteady.

Key Question: How do I remain grounded when the system is in motion?

Session 6  |  @ Winter Institute, Albany  |  Agency: From Insight to Action | March 7, 2027 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Awareness alone does not create change. The final session focuses on translating learning into practice. Participants will reflect on their growth, name their leadership commitments, and develop a sustainable approach for leading themselves and others in the year ahead.

Key Question: How will I intentionally shape the systems I lead?
