Game Changing Sessions

Sunday, March 5 / 3 – 5:15 p.m.

Night School - A 2016 Tribeca Film Festival Official Selection

Watch this feature vérité documentary investigating Adult Education and the dropout epidemic plaguing inner-city schools then join a discussion with Emmy award-winning director Andrew Cohn.

Indianapolis has one of the lowest high school graduation rates in the country. For adult learners Greg, Melissa and Shynika, finally earning their high school diplomas could be a life-changing achievement. Emmy award-winning director Andrew Cohn’s absorbing documentary observes their individual pursuits, fraught with the challenges of daily life and the broader systemic roadblocks faced by many low-income Americans.

"Going deep into the lives of his subjects, filmmaker Andrew Cohn puts faces on statistics and reintroduces the human factor into a faltering social milieu that often gets obscured amid political debates... “Night School” is immersed in its sense of place: Indianapolis, which has one of the country’s highest high school dropout rates. The film’s three subjects, each from a low-income neighborhood, struggle with the challenges of poverty while pushing for new opportunities that a degree can offer them."

Transgenderism: Leadership’s New Frontier / A Paradigm Shift

With Dr. Kand McQueen, School of Public Health, Indiana University

Transgenderism is out of the closet and is here to stay. Schools are being forced to deal with issues of sports participation, locker room use, and bathrooms. Businesses are dealing with employees who transition on the job. Everyone is struggling with the use of pronouns. Strong leadership is needed to guide society through this paradigm shift that has the potential to change how we view that part of humanity known as sex and gender and ultimately, move human beings to a greater level of appreciation of one another.

“Dr. Kand McQueen is the most articulate speaker on issues of gender identity I have ever heard . . . Kand has a unique style – a common sense approach which combines passion with perspective and honesty with humor.”

Doug Bauder, Indiana University.
