Early Career Superintendents Institute | Session 1

Early Career Superintendents Institute | Session 1
The transition from a superintendent’s first year to sustained leadership success presents a new set of opportunities and challenges. While the initial year is often focused on learning the district, building relationships, and establishing credibility, years two through four require superintendents to deepen their leadership, navigate increasingly complex issues, and deliver on their vision for student success. Recognizing these evolving demands, LEAF and NYSCOSS are proud to expand their long-standing commitment to superintendent development through the Early Career Superintendents Institute.

9:30  – 11:00 a.m                        SELF, SYSTEMS, AND LEADERSHIP: The Human Side of Organizational Change
Dr. Vincent Butera & Erica Ebert

Leadership is often measured by strategy, systems, and results - but beneath every initiative and difficult conversation lies something more fundamental: the human experience of leading. This session moves beyond technical leadership skills to address the adaptive challenges superintendents and district leaders face daily - staying grounded under uncertainty, building trust amid tension, and leading systems without being consumed by them.

11:00  – 11:15 a.m.                    Break

11:15 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.          Four Frames to Grow Your Leadership Capacity

                                               Martha Group & Marie Wiles

Through the lens of the structural, human resources, political and symbolic leadership frames, participants will strengthen decision-making and problem-solving skills by analyzing and discussing a complex case study. They will identify a real-time complex challenge in their own district, and collaboratively explore solutions and develop potential action steps to address it.

This session is the first of the Early Career Superintendents Institute series. Topics for future sessions will be outlined prior to lunch.
