Leading for Literacy
"What Every Superintendent Needs to Know About the Science of Reading" - Complimentary Webinar Presented by EAB, a Signature Partner of The Council.
Debates over how to best teach children to read have raged for decades. Proponents of phonics battled "whole-language" advocates until "balanced literacy" arrived, but reading scores have remained stubbornly flat for decades. A few districts, however, have seen transformative improvements in reading outcomes in recent years. EAB research found that each started with the same first step: Ensuring that every teacher and administrator was equipped with a scientific understanding of how the brain learned to read, and how those insights should inform instruction.
This session is designed to help superintendents lead their districts through transformative improvements in reading outcomes. Participants will leave with:
A scientific understanding of how the brain learns to read
A blueprint for aligning district-wide systems with cognitive science to inform instruction
Methods to ensure that students move from learning-to-read to reading-to-learn by the time they reach third grade
