2019 Friend of The Council Award
Congratulations to the Julie M. Marlette, Director of Governmental Relations, New York State School Boards Assocation for being selected to receive the 2019 Friend of The Council Award. The award is given annually in recognition of a person's contribution to The Council and the field of education.
Julie was nominated because she has been a great ally for The Council. In the past session, she made exceptional efforts to gain approval for an increase in the District Superintendents’ salary cap. She arranged for groups of school board members to meet with the Governor’s staff on that issue and other topics of mutual concern. She and her staff have also generated many letters from school board members in support of those priorities.
Throughout her time as NYSSBA’s Director of Governmental Relations, Julie has made it a consistent practice to seek The Council’s perspective on issues, to involve Council staff in meetings, and to assure we are apprised of issues of concern. We attempt to reciprocate. These efforts serve to increase the influence of both organizations and are especially valuable to The Council, given our smaller size.
This year’s award was sponsored by our Premier Silver Partner JASON Learning and presented at the 2019 Winter Institute & Lobby Day’s opening keynote session.
The Selection Process
The Friend of The Council Award was created in 1996 and is presented at our Winter Institute each year.
